How did Olympic runner Frank Shorter '65 learn to love long distance? The Bemis-Forslund Pie Race, of course! At least, according to the blogger at "Writing on the Run" who attributes Shorter's interest in running to his first experience with the pie race, where he placed seventh and won one of the tasty apple treats. The article, which gives a brief overview of the pie race and Shorter's involvement in it, also notes that the runner would go on to win the 1972 Olympic Marathon gold medal.
