Ayana Christie '07 spoke about her experience at NMH and how it shaped her for a profile piece on The Prep School Negro website. Christie is quoted as saying, in part, "Northfield Mount Hermon School set me on an irrevocable journey of self-discovery that has uncovered other invaluable endeavors, namely, attending Dartmouth College. Now I understand what four years of adolescence between the trees really did for my pursuit of excellence."
The film of the same name, The Prep School Negro, was screened on Saturday, April 24, in the Rhodes Arts Center theater at NMH, followed by a question and answer session with filmmaker André Robert Lee. The film explored Lee’s personal experience moving from the ghettos of Philadelphia to a prestigious prep school where he had a full scholarship. In order to understand his past, Lee has been talking to current students of color at prep schools about such issues as the ivory tower, accelerated desegregation, and racial naiveté. The film screening was part of the annual Circle of Sisters Gala.
