John A. Blackwell '83, science instructor and director of the Grainger Observatory at Phillips Exeter Academy,  won the 2010 Thomas J. Brennan Award from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), for excellence in teaching high school astronomy. According to a news release from Phillips Exeter, the research projects undertaken by Blackwell’s students have included ‘using electrical charge-coupled device (CCD) images to find asteroids, constructing Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams of open clusters and light curves of variable stars, searching for supernovae by imaging galaxy-rich fields with a robotic telescope and conducting observation runs at Kitt Peak National Observatory.
